Job Description

As a Sr. Staff Systems Engineer within our Global Systems Engineering Organization, you'll be right at the forefront of Bio-Rad's Clinical Diagnostics R&D Group - leading the design and development of clinical diagnostics products across clinical immunology, immunohematology, diabetes, and molecular diagnostics platforms.

Reporting to the Systems Engineering Director, you will take ownership of the systems level approach in defining concepts, system architecture, requirements and design of new products. You will leverage your knowledge of engineering principles, clinical applications and implement systems engineering practices on assigned projects. You will influence and develop the team working on NPD to maintain the focus on delivering a best-in-class experience for our customers. You'll also collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists, providing your technical knowledge and insights to ensure that the product architecture and design deliver the highest levels of quality, reliability, usability and functionality.

In time, you will lead a team working on new product development projects as well as sustaining projects. You will execute on an exciting roadmap to support our ambitious clinical diagnostics strategy to drive long term growth for the company.

How You'll Make an Impact:

  • Provide technical leadership and knowledge of systems engineering principles and their application to developing cost- effective, reliable, and high-quality systems that include elements of microfluidics, optics, thermal transfer, nucleic acid amplification, and robotics in order to meet customer needs and business requirements.
  • Generate, analyze, and develop robust architectures, communicating and coordinating with marketing and cross-functional development teams, and assist the development team to perform tradeoff studies to balance between development cost, schedule, quality, and performance. Review and analyze customer and business requirements to translate these to appropriate system requirements and functions.
  • Champion the adoption and execution of DfX principles. Champion - design for manufacturability, serviceability, maintainability and other "ilities"
  • Build upon the existing engineering capability in the areas of Systems Architecture, System Design & Integration, Requirements Management, Configuration Management, Human Factors, Risk Management, Robustness and Reliability, Design for Six Sigma, Modeling, Analysis and Simulation
  • Participate or lead cross-functional teams in system requirements definition, system functional decomposition and requirements allocation, system architecture definition, system modeling, and requirements traceability and compliance including verification plans and reports.
  • Work with human factors engineers to ensure user needs are met with System Design and participate or lead design validation activities.
  • Lead, conduct and participate in design/project technical reviews.
  • Conduct and participate in DoE, FMEAs, Hazard Analysis, Risk Management process.
  • Eventually be able to lead a systems team and implement functional management processes and tools to monitor progress of engineering deliverables across the portfolio.

What You Bring:

  • Education: BS in Engineering. MS in Engineering or equivalent experience. PhD or MBA is a plus.
  • 10+ years' experience in the engineering/development of complex integrated systems comprised of electromechanical, fluidics and/or assay/chemistry subsystems. Ideally in the life sciences / diagnostics industry or equivalent experience in other industries. Should have full product development cycle experience with demonstrated commercial success of the product in the field.
  • 3 years of demonstrated functional management experience of managing and growing successful engineering teams.
  • Experience working in a regulated industry, ideally with IVD experience, QSR/ISO regulations & standards, risk management (ISO14971) and Usability Engineering (IEC62366).
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills including high discretion/judgment in decision making. Ability to foresee, plan and manage risks within current project and/or technology
  • Ability to interact professionally with all organizational levels. Ability to work and excel within a fast paced, dynamic, evolving and changing work environment.
  • DFSS Green Belt or Black Belt certification or other training in Design for Excellence principles is desirable.
  • Proficiency with systems engineering and modeling tools. Proficiency with C++, Python, or Matlab preferred.

Location: Bio-Rad is pleased to offer the flexibility of a hybrid work environment for this role, 3 days in office, 2 days remote, working out of the Hercules, CA office.

Compensation: The estimated base salary range for this position is $149,000 to $220,000 at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors. This position is eligible for a variable annual bonus, which is dependent upon achievement of your individual objectives and Company performance.
