Job Summary

The Lab Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing scientific and organizational aspects of a mid-sized wet lab performing a range of molecular biology assays focused on infectious diseases, primarily malaria. These include qPCR, next generation sequencing, and highly multiplexed antibody profiling. Under minimal supervision, the supervisor will oversee the activities and staff of a laboratory including the supervision of staff research associates, visiting scholars, and new laboratory trainees (e.g. postdoctoral fellows). Supervision of personnel will include ensuring they have what they need to complete laboratory experiments, assisting with troubleshooting, and providing resources (e.g. training others on how to run assays). The supervisor is expected to become familiar with all aspects of laboratory work in the group and to design, optimize, and perform assays as needed. The supervisor will also be responsible for overseeing organizational aspects of laboratory including electronic notebooks and sample database, physical organization of the space.

The EPPIcenter (eppicenter.ucsf.edu) aims to advance the understanding of infectious diseases to reduce global morbidity and mortality. We believe that the greatest success in the fight against infectious diseases will come through a highly interdisciplinary, systems epidemiology approach, connecting traditionally siloed theoretical work, technology development, generation and collection of empiric data, and analysis using statistical and mathematical modeling.

The Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is an internationally recognized global leader in clinical care, research, and education. Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area.
  • At least 3 years' experience planning and troubleshooting molecular biology experiments
  • At least 1 year supervisory experience, ideally of laboratory staff, including managing projects with complex priorities across staff, tracking progress toward research goals, and ensuring timelines are met
  • Expertise working with and organizing data electronically, including sample organization and experimental data. Examples would include electronic laboratory notebooks (e.g., Benchling), and experience using relational databases (e.g., SQL, Access). At least 2 years' experience.
  • Knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines. At least 1 year experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of a limited variety of specialized laboratory equipment. This should include at least 1 year expertise with some combination of: Illumina NGS Platforms, multiplex PCR, qPCR, RNA sequencing, single cell methods, cell culture, library preparation for amplicon Sequencing and/or whole genome sequencing.
  • Focus of knowledge and skills dependent on area of specialty (laboratory research or experimental design). Advanced and highly specific knowledge and expertise associated with conducting and reporting on scientific research experiments and findings.
  • Leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities and scheduling instructional space.
  • Solid interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
  • Knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of research discipline or instructional design to collaborate effectively with faculty and function as a resource to research and instructional associates.
  • Solid interpersonal communication skills to effectively supervise staff.
  • Ability to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree preferred.
