DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW About Underground Scholars Programs The Santa Cruz Underground Scholars supports building a prison-to-school pathway through recruitment, retention, wellness, and advocacy. By creating a pathway for formerly incarcerated and system-impacted individuals into higher education, we directly challenge the stigmas associated with our community. By supporting a prison-to-school pipeline, the Santa Cruz Underground Scholars Program cultivates a healthy community and pathway for formerly incarcerated and system-impacted people to thrive in higher education. The Underground Scholars Program at UC Santa Cruz was created in partnership between students who were formerly incarcerated and university staff advocates. Student leadership continues to be a core component of the current and future development of the program. The Underground Scholars Program is situated within the Renaissance Scholars Programs, which is a part of the Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS) department, located with the Student Success and Equity cluster in the Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS). About Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS) The Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS) mission is to advance social mobility for transfer, re-entry, and independent students by providing transformative higher education experiences. STARS maintains an expertise in guiding students who disproportionately enter higher education through community colleges, and actively removes systemic barriers that impede their success. STARS offers culturally relevant counseling and mentorship programs, as well as equity-centered programs that create access, cultivate belonging, motivate persistence, nurture wellness, and establish the conditions where our students can thrive in and beyond college. STARS communities include students who have experiences with community college, returning to school at an older age, military, being parents, foster care, homelessness, incarceration, or independent status. About Student Success and Equity (SSE) The Student Success and Equity (SSE) portfolio of departments is a branch of DSAS focused on academic support services, advising/counseling, student life/co-curricular programming, student identity development, and retention/student success initiatives. Student Success and Equity provides services to the campus community with over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students and has over 64 career employees and 475 student staff employees operating in 8 facilities/locations.
