Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) - Training Program




Training Program Description:

In this program, you will be introduced to the content contained in the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS)? certification administered by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), and includes expanded content related to the Healthcare and Healthcare IT industry.


This program is designed for students who have previous experience in IT or healthcare, and it is designed to serve as a pathway into health information and technology careers. It also provides a broad understanding of health information and technology for individuals in non-IT related roles in healthcare.


This program is ideal for those newer to health care, current industry professionals seeking to specialize, and individuals with an affinity for data management.


Note: This program includes both online classroom training and on-site hands-on internship/externship training.



Training Program Details:

  • This is a temporary training program lasting 9 months.
  • This training program requires the learners to participate Mon-Fri, 8 AM-5 PM for the duration of the program.
  • 40 hours per week - 39 weeks 9- weeks Online Training; 30- weeks internship/ externship
  • Total Stipend: $30,800, This stipend is divided for the duration of the program, and payment is made on OCHIN's semi-monthly pay schedule.
  • Eligible for monthly Health Marketplace reimbursement up to $600 for 9 months (Participant cost only) - some restrictions apply.
  • Internet Stipend $35/month for 9 months

Training Program Objectives:

  • Introduce the various components of the CAHIMS body of knowledge.
  • Articulate characteristics, roles, and inter -relationships of various healthcare entities.
  • Recognize the various characteristics, applications, and technical components that support the healthcare environment.
  • Identify the components of systems analysis and design.
  • Describe the importance of a valid design plan to support the goals of the organization.
  • Articulate the importance of sound methodologies to support the testing, design, and implementation of applications.
  • Describe the challenges and opportunities of software support.
  • Identify the components of software maintenance as related to the healthcare environment.
  • Create awareness of the many challenges of the implementation development life cycle.
  • Identify the current state of privacy and security challenges and opportunities in healthcare today.
  • Describe the leadership and management goals, responsibilities, and opportunities of today's healthcare leaders


The HIM duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversight of the quality, timeliness, and accuracy of the medical record and patient indexes for patient care, legal, revenue, research, and regulatory needs
  • Classification of diagnosis and procedures according to approved classification and nomenclatures such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, SNOMED, etc
  • Maintaining the security and integrity of health information
  • Providing documentation tools/services such as dictation, transcription, electronic templates, scribes, and paper forms
  • Collection, quality control, and dissemination of data for comparative data bases and statistical reports including specific disease and procedure registries
  • Providing access to medical record information through release of information processes
  • Maintains and contributes to patient care by organizing and maintaining patients' medical records and health information
  • Communicates with patients, medical professionals, and insurance companies.
  • Answers requests for information and documents
  • Transcribes notes and collaborates with healthcare providers to ensure the accuracy of medical records
  • Updates and reviews medical records by reviewing information, notifying health care providers of record deficiencies, and tracking outstanding records
  • Categorizes diagnoses, treatments and conditions using standardized healthcare codes
  • Maintains patient confidence and protects hospital operations by keeping information confidential and complying with privacy policies and regulation
  • Updates medical history in a timely manner
  • Receiving and processing patient forms, medical histories and test results from medical providers
  • Analyzing the information collected to ensure that it is correct and accurate
  • Assessing health records and insurance claims
  • Ensuring compliance with confidentiality laws and regulations
  • Managing and updating data for clinical databases and registries
  • Using classification software to allocate appropriate clinical codes for insurance compensation and data examination
  • Other duties as assigned.

Training Program Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Participants must live within 30min-45min from the Service site location of, Healdsburg, CA
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident/Green Card holder (not open to non-citizens or Visa holders)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is beneficial for this role
  • Must be able to pass a national criminal background check successfully.
