Position Summary:

The Electrical Controls and Project Engineer is responsible for design, configuration, integration, and implementation of process control solutions for our wood products manufacturing facilities. In addition, this person will assist with capital projects, facility maintenance and shutdown activities to ensure plant safety and minimal impact to production. This position may be based at any of our locations, with travel to other Collins facilities and response to callouts as needed is required.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Designs, develops, installs, executes, and oversees electrical or mechanical control systems, equipment, and machinery.
  • Examines plant processes to develop and implement changes and new designs that improve and increase efficiency/productivity. Seamlessly combines newer technologies and extensions of current architectures.
  • Provides technical support of Programmable Logical Controller based hardware and software while utilizing electronic and mechanical theories and principles to troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Provides process engineering support to include:
    • developing a broad familiarity of the process and unit operations, including all process control systems configuration;
    • process troubleshooting, optimization, and yield improvement for various projects;
    • providing backup support to other process control and electrical supervisor personnel; and
    • configuring and supporting process control system interfaces to other computer systems.
  • Provides ongoing informal and formal training for electrical crew to assure development of operating and maintenance practices and processes.
  • Works closely with electrical supervisors to maintain all documentation related to process control system configuration including SOP's.
  • Assists with planning and budgeting for facility shutdown activities.
  • Coaches the maintenance teams to think strategically about downtime prevention and long-term resolution of issues.
  • Maintains a culture of efficiency and the ability to react quickly to downtime events.
  • Works with operational team to support and/or lead continuous improvement of assets and asset performance.
  • Plans and coordinates technical design and engineering implementation of project work.
  • Coordinates and communicates activities with plant operations departments for maintenance and repair work on the plant site.
  • Provides maintenance and operations support, capital project implementation and other continuous improvement projects to include:
    • creating an electrical and process control plan,
    • providing electrical budgets, and
    • collaborating with in-house & outside contractor personnel as needed.
  • Ensures compliance with all standards and programs (safety, environmental, quality, maintenance, and manufacturing policies and procedures) within area of responsibility.
  • Performs additional duties as required by supervisor.
  • On-site attendance is essential to effectively perform the listed duties and responsibilities.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of plant equipment and processes and the ability to troubleshoot potential issues.
  • Self-motivated, energetic, and proactive with the ability to multi-task in an organized manner.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to lead or work as part of a team.
  • Ability to travel to other Collins' facilities. Ability to work weekends and holidays and respond to callouts as needed.
  • Ability to do full controls integration, from electrical/instrumentation design, PLC and HMI.
  • Proficient using personal computers and associated software (Excel, Word, Power Point, Project, SQL, Access, CMMS, AutoCAD).
  • Versed in discrete and analog control scheme development and implementation.
  • Full understanding of pressure, flow, level, temperature measurements and calibration techniques.
  • Excellent analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills; ability to think creatively and find innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • High level of personal integrity and ethical and professional standards.
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills.

Education and Experience:

  • Oregon electrical license required.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a similar position required.
  • Previous supervisory or lead experience preferred.
  • Experience with continuous manufacturing processes.
  • Hands-on experience with steam, hydraulic, and pneumatics systems.
  • Working experience with Allen-Bradley & Simatic/TI505 PLC's, Wonderware HMI, FactoryTalk or equivalent required.
  • Experienced in Ethernet network design and implementation, including fiber and 10/100/1000BaseTX required.
