Pay Range

  • $142,050 - $182,388 Annual (TSS.3)
  • $170,430 - $218,868 Annual (TSS.4)

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

This job is hybrid/on-site which requires 2-3 days a week or more when required.


Job Description

We have an opening for an Electrical Engineer in our Project Management Office (PMO) who will prepare construction documents for new construction, remodeling, and modifications to conventional offices and laboratory facilities at LLNL.

The Project Management Office (PMO) provides LLNL with engineering, design, estimating, construction, and project management services. PMO provides infrastructure services to enable cutting-edge research and development in the areas of defense technologies, global security, laser science, bioscience, and more. PMO offers cradle to grave infrastructure services to achieve reliable delivery of completed projects with priority on safety, collaboration, and a workforce working toward our shared vision.

You Will

  • Perform independent technical tasks associated with the engineering, planning, design, and construction of projects associated with LLNL's electrical infrastructure.
  • Design electrical systems predominantly for building construction projects including power distribution systems, lighting, grounding, and other signal systems. Apply NEC Code standards to design solutions associated with LLNL's electrical infrastructure for new construction, remodeling, and expansion of conventional office and laboratory facilities, and equipment.
  • Prepare technical drawings, specifications, and calculations (e.g. load flow, branch, short circuit, arc flash, system reliability, relay coordination, motor starting, etc).
  • Review designs prepared by subcontracted engineers for code and standard compliance, and constructability.
  • Determine functional electrical requirements for new or modified specialized equipment and support systems.
  • Represent the organization in providing engineering solutions to a diverse range of moderate to complex facility electrical technical issues and/or problems associated with specific projects.
  • Partner with electrical supply vendors to select, specify, and procure electrical components utilized in designs.
  • Provide engineering support during construction by reviewing submittals and shop drawings, responding to contractor questions, evaluating change order requests, resolving field problems, and performing inspections.
  • Determine functional electrical requirements for new or modified specialized equipment and support systems, perform electrical engineering calculations for short-circuit analysis of facility power distribution systems, and arc flash safety analysis as needed using SKM and Agi32 for lighting.
  • Provide field engineering services for LLNL electricians, and field crews by helping to coordinate the selection, procurement, and delivery of construction materials, resolving field questions and conflicts, and performing field observation and inspections.
  • Lead multiple complex internal electrical projects with responsibility for the development and compliance with technical criteria, budgets, schedules, deliverables, and direct the work of electrical designers and drafters preparing models and drawings in AutoCAD and Revit for projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the TSS.4 level

  • Lead highly complex internal multi-disciplinary engineering projects as the Project Lead or Design Manager with overall responsibility for developing technical criteria, budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Prepare procurement documents for the subcontracting of outside consultant Architectural/Engineering (A/E) services to supplement internal engineering capability; manage the outside A/E contracts, including preparing project scopes, technical criteria, engineering design estimates and schedules.
  • Prepare construction documents for designs, including construction drawings, construction specifications, and procurement specifications for the pre-purchase of LLNL furnished equipment and ensure construction documents that have been prepared by both internal staff and external A/E firms are in conformance with applicable Building Codes and LLNL Standards.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and at least ten years of electrical engineering design experience in an architectural/engineering consulting firm.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in design work with the application of electrical power distribution system components such as transformers, switchgears, switchboards, distribution panelboards, motor control centers, automatic transfer switches, uninterrupted power sources, backup generators, lighting, and grounding systems.
  • Experience designing 12 and 13.8 kV electrical utility systems, preparing electrical one-line diagrams, load studies, branch and short-circuit analysis, arc flash calculations, electrical building layouts, area classification drawings, and size relative electrical equipment.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate in a team environment and present technical information to project managers and stakeholders.
  • Uses independent judgment to develop solutions with assumptions, strong attention to detail.
  • Comprehensive Knowledge of California Electrical Code and Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24).
  • Experience using, applying, and interpreting the National Electrical Code (NEC), Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70E), National Electrical Manufacture Association (NEMA), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), International Electrical Testing Association (NETA), Underwriter Laboratories (UL).
  • Software capabilities: Experience using AutoCAD and Revit to prepare design drawings, AGi32 for lighting studies and design, SKM Power Tools, and MS Office Suite.

Additional Qualifications at the TSS.4 Level

  • Experienced with the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101).
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in design work with the application of electrical power distribution system components such as transformers, switchgears, switchboards, distribution panelboards, motor control centers, automatic transfer switches, uninterrupted power sources, backup generators, lighting, and grounding systems.
  • Advanced Knowledge of California Electrical Code and Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24).

Qualifications we desire

  • Professional registration as an Electrical Engineer in the State of California.
  • Experience using DOE Orders, Standards, and Code of Federal Regulations.
