Job Description

We have multiple openings for mid-career Mechanical or Industrial Engineers. This work will take place within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate, home to the world's most energetic laser. It is an exciting time to join the team that achievedfusion ignition in December 2022 (as well as multiple subsequent times), a historic moment in science, opening up new physics regimes and setting the stage for new fusion energy possibilities.

You will be working closely with a team of engineers, designers, and technicians engaged in mission critical maintenance and performance upgrades to mechanical systems supporting NIF. You will also contribute to the engineering design and development of new hardware and system upgrades to continually improve system performance and reliability. Responsibilities will encompass the entire asset lifecycle from requirements development, design, vendor sourcing and fabrication, installation, commissioning, operations support, maintenance, refurbishment, and eventual decommissioning. These positions are in the Laser Science Engineering Organization (LSEO), within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either of two job classification levels based on your knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

In this role, you will

  • Act as the primary point of contact for asset management of one or more assigned mechanical systems, responsible for preventive, predictive, corrective, and reactive maintenance, and operations, upgrades, and system expansion projects.
  • Derive engineering requirements, develop conceptual designs, conduct design reviews, oversee detailed design process, part fabrication, system assembly, and testing and incorporate input as necessary from broadly defined instructions while interfacing with a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Perform calculations and prepare engineering documentation including mechanical engineering safety notes, work orders and permits, maintenance and installation procedures for moderately complex to complex scope.
  • Perform Failure Modes and Effects Analysis.
  • Develop and execute commissioning, maintenance, and calibration procedures followed by analyzing, interpreting, presenting, and acting upon the resulting data while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, designers, technicians, operators, coordinators, procurement staff, and other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Contribute to daily activities in NIF by providing engineering support including troubleshooting and collective decision-making to maximize system uptime. Generate and communicate detailed plans, schedules, and budgets for project activities.
  • Periodic support during off-hours for maintenance and response to off-normal conditions since NIF operates 24/7.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the SES.3 Level

  • Provide significant engineering knowledge to resolve complex technical and programmatic issues which may not be well defined. Use advanced methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to evaluate results appropriate to meet operational requirements.
  • Perform independent technical tasks as primary technical contact to provide solutions for a diverse range of complex issues with minimal direction.
  • Oversee and mentor other personnel.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
  • Broad experience with the full cycle of reliability engineering, manufacturing techniques, engineering hardware design, systems engineering, asset management, and defect elimination.
  • Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Proficiency with using standard project management practices.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Experience providing guidance and informal mentoring to staff.
  • Prior experience as an engineering officer of the watch, manufacturing, or similar operations engineering experience.
  • Ability to work occasional off-hours for maintenance and response to off-normal conditions.

In Addition, at the SES.3 Level

  • Advanced knowledge and experience of complex engineering hardware design, fabrication, and testing processes and ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
  • Significant experience independently leading teams, coordinating efforts across disciplines, and ensuring compatibility with interdependent systems. Employ project management and supervisory skills to achieve required system performance.
  • Significant experience defining scope from often not well defined and evolving requirements.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Ability to interpret specifications and mechanical drawings including Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience working on large-scale facility or equivalent system operations, maintenance, and production support.
  • Experience working in an environment with stringent safety and security policies.
  • Experience using Computerized Management Maintenance System (CMMS) and Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM).
  • California certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent certification in another state or Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification with intent to obtain PE license.
