Under supervision of the practice manager and clinical pharmacist and guided by the procedures of the Ambulatory Services, the Pharmacy Technician functions as the primary contact for prescription refill coordination and medication authorizations for UCSF Cardiovascular Care and Prevention Clinics. He/She is responsible for coordinating and addressing refill requests in a timely manner and facilitating medication prior authorization requests with the provider. He/she assists with entry of prescription information into EMR (ex: APEX), creates and routes Electronic Medical Record (EMR) encounters based on information received via pharmacy faxes, patient phone calls and EMR patient portal messages; call in medications to the pharmacy; follow-up with pharmacies and provide timely responses to patients on prescription status; prepare forms for provider review and signatures; and other tasks related to clinical operations. This position may also be called upon to assist with auto electronic refill service under protocol. The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for facilitating prescription prior authorization requests, obtaining and preparing proper forms for providers to complete for insurance authorizations, requesting information from insurance companies and pharmacies on behalf of prescribers regarding possible alternative therapies and providing patients with timely communications regarding status of requests.

The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of insurance pharmacy utilization management practice and strategies, pharmacy practice and pharmacy law. He/She may also have a role in championing quality initiatives or providing insight into the pharmacy support role in optimizing clinical operations. The Pharmacy Technician may be required to work at a variety of clinic facilities within the San Francisco area. He/She must work as a team member with other practice staff, consistently projecting a professional and courteous demeanor, demonstrating excellent customer service skills with patients, providers and staff. The Pharmacy Technician is required to comply with the Medical Center House and Telephone Standards, the Ambulatory Attendance Monitoring Policy and other applicable department policies.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at UCSF has long been nationally recognized as one of the founding fathers for clinical pharmacy services, which was established in 1965. Today, the department continues to lead the profession through the integration of advanced technology & robotics, comprehensive pharmaceutical care and clinical services.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Current California Licensure as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Two years related experience in clinical setting and/or community pharmacy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both over the telephone and in person.
  • Able to sit at a computer workstation for extended periods of time.
  • Basic keyboard and computer skills, ability to utilize software programs to conduct data entry.
  • Basic math skills required.
  • Strong Organizational skills to manage data processing work flow.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to work well with patients, clinical staff, providers and pharmacy staff,
  • Familiarity with MS Word and Excel
  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with other team members, physicians, nurses, and employees within the organization.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of medical status of patients.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified pharmacy technician (CPhT) with at least two years related experience in billing, benefits coordination, and prescription refill coordination.
  • Understanding of medical abbreviations, pharmaceutical terminology and calculations.
  • Generic/trade names of medications
  • Experience in specialty pharmacy operations.

License/Certification

  • Must be certified through the State Board of Pharmacy
  • Possess a valid and current Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT)
  • Must be in good standing with the State Board of Pharmacy
